Tehtyäni useita vuosia pääasiassa live-esityksiä, olen viime aikoina esiintynyt myös valokuvakameralle. Tämä uusi ilmaisutapa ei ole ollut minulle itsestään selvä. Performanssitaiteen oleellinen ominaisuus, katoavuus, muuttuu valokuvassa objektiksi ja samalla tuotteeksi. Aikanaan lopetin maalaamisen juuri päästäkseni tuottamasta uusia tuotteita. Elävässä performanssissa tekijä on täysin teoksen sisällä, hän on sen konkreettinen ydin. Maalaus taas jää aina tekijästään irralliseksi objektiksi, vaikka tekijä olisi ladannut siihen tunnetta ja sydäntään miten paljon tahansa. Ollessaan itse teos, ei voi omin silmin nähdä, miltä se näyttää. Kameralle tehdyssä performanssissa esiintyjä näkee syntyneet kuvat, tekee valinnat ja tuo esille harkitun otoksen, mikä ainakin juuri nyt on minusta kiinnostavaa huolimatta siitä, että halutessani esitellä niitä julkisesti, näyttelyssä, ne ovat monistettavia tuotteita. Performanssit kameralle voivat olla uudelleen rakennettuja performanssiaktioita, ”muisti-ikkunoita” menneisiin esityksiin, spontaania jäsentymättömien ideoiden testaamista ja kokeilua erilaisilla materiaaleilla, esineillä ja eleillä. Videosta Videokamera on varsin luonnollinen valinta performanssille, koska se tarjoaa käyttöön ajan, liikkeen ja äänen elementit. ”Espresso” on digikameralle esitetty ja sen videolla kuvattu rituaalinen kahvihetki joka ei suju tapojen mukaisesti. About the photographs
After working many years with live art I have lately performed also for a camera. To me this is not only a matter of new, interesting means of expression but also a controversial choice. In a photograph the ephemeral quality of live actions is turned to an object and a product. This is a conflict I have to face because ephemerality was one of the main reasons I completely stopped painting - producing objects. In a live performance you are totally inside the work, you are the heart of it. You are the work unlike while painting a picture, which will remain a separate object in spite of how much of your heart you put into it. Being the work, you cannot see it with your own eyes, but in a photo performance you perform, see the results and show a controlled image to the audience, which makes it interesting to me. The performances in front of a camera can be re-arranged performance scenes - “memory windows” to bygone pieces, spontaneous try outs of unstructured ideas and experimenting with materials, objects, gestures.. About the video Video camera is a quite natural choice for performance because it operates with the elements of time, movement and sound. A video work also takes up the position between concrete and ephemeral. “Espresso” is a performance for digital camera video about a ritual like coffee time turning into disgrace.
